SYNOPSIS

The film features 21-year-old Anže Marenče, the brother of the author, who embarked with four of his friends on his first mountain expedition. They climbed a new route in the maiden south face of the Gorkiy Peak (6050 m) in the Celestial Mountains, or Tien Shan, the mountain range in the border region of China, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. They then ascended the Khan Tengri, or Lord of the Spirits (7010 m), via the normal route.

Why We Would Need All That? is a simple story about an expedition and Anže’s contemplation on the mountain climbing. Throughout the film Anže reveals his love of climbing and attempts at answering the question which he has raised at the beginning, and is inherent in the title.

DIRECTOR PROFILE

TINE MARENČE (born in 1978) graduated from geography and sociology at the Faculty of arts in Ljubljana in 2006. In 1997, he became involved in mountain climbing. The making of the film took one year. It has been shot by amateurs; all video recordings were made by Tine Marenče himself, and the photographs by the members of the expedition and friends (Anže Marenče, Aleš Česen, Darko Podgornik). Animations and maps were contributed by Matej Žakelj. The film score is also original (by the Kramfid band).
